While you fuss about the design or cut of your wedding gown, you should also think about another important element: your gown's fabric. The fabric of your dream gown can make or break the gown's style, plus it will determine your level of comfort on the big day. You wouldn't want to be a sweaty summer bride, and sneezing "I do" in December doesn't sound appealing either. We talked to wedding gown designer Hana Saab Tomacruz of Saab Fashion House to help you choose the best fabric for your gown in relation to your wedding date.
For the cooler months
Hana shares that as a general guideline, heavier fabrics are best worn during the cooler months. These thicker fabrics will allow you to stay warm and toasty. However, if you're still bent on using heavy fabric for your gown and you're having a summer wedding, Hana suggests that you play with a more revealing cut for your dress. Doing so will allow you to stay comfortable on the big day.
Examples of these heavier fabrics are:
- Satin
- Duchesse
- Mikado Silk
For the warmer months
It goes without saying that lighter fabrics work best during the summer. These light fabrics also lend an ethereal feel to your gown since they move and flow gracefully. Such fabrics will keep you cool in the warm weather, but you may still use them in the cooler months like December and January--just remember to ask your designer to use these fabrics in multiple layers, says Hana.
Examples of these lighter fabrics are:
- Chiffon
- Organza
- Tulle
Whatever fabric you choose, remember that you'll be wearing your gown almost the entire day--so don't let comfort take a backseat! For wedding gown inspirations, see our gallery of below.
